The Kapiti Chamber of Commerce strongly supports and welcomes the roll-out of fibre optic cabling to Kapiti, under the Government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband initiative.
Kapiti has seen better rail, air and road services in recent years, and now the information expressway is about to arrive.
While for many Kapiti people it will be nice to be able to get substantially faster and more reliable Internet if we want it, and some businesses will benefit hugely if they take it, the real potential for making use of this asset lies in the future and with businesses and products/services which perhaps do not yet exist. It is a milestone change for us.
It means that Kapiti businesses can expand further in Kapiti without having to move to larger centres, and businesses that are in larger centres can move here to maximise the technology, our new roads, our airport and train service. It means that Kapiti businesses can take digitally creative and knowledge based products and services to the world as if the distance between us the world did not exist. People can maintain personal or customer relationships via Internet communications, and sell products to anyone in the world via the Internet.
While Otaki will not receive the cabling, there are options available and the Chamber will work with others to help ensure a suitable service is delivered – not just for the people of Otaki, but also given the importance and potential of the Clean Technology Park.
Over the coming months, the Chamber will be actively working with other stakeholders to take a leadership role in helping ensure Kapiti and Horowhenua understand what this opportunity means and how to benefit from it.
